Making your own beef tallow is a great way to use extra fat trimmings from Brisket or fat from the cow. The tallow makes for a delicious substitute for oil or butter, and it taste delicious .
- Prep Time:
- Cook Time:
Ingredients
- (1/2 cup water, 3 - 5 pounds Beef suet (fat)) Beef Tallow
Directions
- Heat the beef suet(fat)in a large pot or crock pot works great..... Place all cubed up fat in a 4-6 quart crock pot. Turn on medium-low heat.
- Render the beef fat...… Allow the beef fat to simmer on this low and slow temperature for 4 hours, stirring about every 30 minutes with a wooden spoon. If needed , scrape the bottom of pot with spoon to keep any stuck bits of beef or fat from burning. Do not let your fat boil. keep heat very low and stir to maintain a very light simmer.
- Finish rendering the fat.... Your Tallow will be finished rendering when fat covers most of the remaining pieces in pot . The pieces that are in pot will be light browned and look crispy. You won't be able to see any more white fat or solid pieces of fat.
- Strain the rendering golden colored fat.....Turn off heat and allow tallow to cool slightly. Prepare a large bowl with a strainer. Carefully pour the tallow from pan through strainer into large bowl. The strainer will catch pieces of rendered beef.
- Strain the rendered fat.....fit your glass jar with funnel and insert either a piece of cheese cloth ,a coffee filter, or a paper towel. Slowly and carefully pour the liquid tallow from the bowl into the funnel. This step will reduce any remaining impurities.
- Use immediately or store....Your tallow is ready to use or leave cool to see that beautiful white color appear. It is safe to store in fridge for 3 months, or a year in freezer. Use to cook potato's, sear steaks, or roasted vegetables.
